Kosovo parliament reconvenes amid deadlock over presidential election

Kosovo’s newly elected parliament convened for its inaugural session on Wednesday following the June vote, but the crucial task of electing a president remains unresolved. The ruling Vetevendosje party requested additional time to discuss a candidate with other factions, prompting its leader Albin Kurti to join forces with opposition Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) leader Lumir Abdixhiku in endorsing Judge Bekim Sejdiu for the presidency.
The joint endorsement quickly ran into trouble when roughly a third of LDK members objected, exposing a split within the party and intensifying the long-standing hostility between Vetevendosje and its rivals. The impasse underscores the difficulty of forming a governing coalition and could prolong the political uncertainty in Kosovo. No further progress was reported on reaching a consensus.
