Kremlin denounces US plan to levy up to 100% tariffs on Russian oil buyers

During a virtual briefing, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described a US initiative to levy tariffs as high as 100% on nations acquiring Russian oil as illegal and unacceptable. The measure stems from a sanctions bill passed by the US Senate, which still needs the House's consent before becoming law, and would affect key buyers like India and China. Peskov also said Russia is waiting for negotiations with India on establishing new nuclear power plants, underscoring the deepening rouble-rupee trade that now accounts for the majority of their bilateral exchange.

He added that the forthcoming Putin-Modi meeting at the BRICS summit in New Delhi will allow the Russian president to discuss Ukraine and other international issues with the Indian premier. The summit, scheduled for September 12-13, will also host leaders from China and Iran among others.
