Kremlin hopes for near-term meeting between Putin and US envoy Witkoff
The Kremlin said it expects a prompt meeting in Russia between President Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff after his talks in Oslo.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff landed at Oslo Airport on Tuesday morning, joining a Norway-Finland-hosted dialogue on the Ukraine conflict that includes President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. Kremlin spokesman Dmitrij Peskov said Witkoff may convey Ukrainian and European viewpoints to President Vladimir Putin in an upcoming meeting on Russian soil. Sources familiar with the arrangements said that Witkoff is scheduled to travel to Russia after the Oslo summit, but the Kremlin has not formally confirmed the plan.
Other participants include Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and US envoy Jared Kushner, who will attend digitally. The talks come amid heightened US-Ukraine tensions and a looming US mid-term election.
