Kremlin pushes for US nuclear talks, insists UK and France be included

The Kremlin says any future strategic stability talks with the United States must also address the nuclear arsenals of Britain and France.

Russia is seeking to restart high-level discussions on strategic stability and nuclear arms control with the United States, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitrij Peskov. He suggested that the issue could be placed on the agenda of a possible meeting between President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump at the upcoming APEC summit in China. Peskov emphasized that any such negotiations must now consider the nuclear stockpiles of European allies, specifically the United Kingdom and France, noting the absence of a global legal framework for these weapons.

He described one outlet situation as “exceptionally dangerous” and said talks would be complex and lengthy. The United States has previously advocated for a trilateral format that would also include China, but Beijing’s foreign ministry dismissed the idea as unfair and unworkable.

Why it matters

It signals a shift in Russia’s diplomatic stance, potentially expanding nuclear talks to include key European powers.
