Kremlin to Consider US Invite for Putin’s Attendance at Miami G20, Eyes Ukraine Talks

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia will review the United States' invitation for President Vladimir Putin to attend the December G20 in Miami, but no decision has been made yet.

The Kremlin announced that it will examine the United States' invitation for President Vladimir Putin to participate in the G20 summit scheduled for December in Miami, though no final decision has been reached. Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Russia welcomes the increasing involvement of European nations in pursuing a settlement to the Ukraine conflict. The invitation was disclosed by US secretary of state Marco Rubio following a meeting with Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, and is intended to give Putin a chance to engage with President Donald Trump and other world leaders.

Putin’s last in-person G20 appearance was in 2019, with only a virtual presence at the 2023 summit in India. The gathering, to be held at Trump National Doral, may also provide a venue for talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, a prospect that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Washington is working to facilitate, though no confirmation has been received from either side.

Why it matters

The Kremlin's response will influence high-level dialogue on the Ukraine war and broader US-Russia relations.
