Kristelig Folkeparti pushes for a Norwegian terror organization register

Kristelig Folkeparti leader Joel Ystebø called for Norway to create its own list of terrorist groups, naming Hamas, Hezbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

During a recent Storting session, Joel Ystebø of Kristelig Folkeparti urged the government to draft legislation establishing a Norwegian terror list. He proposed adding Hamas, Hezbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as designated terrorist organisations. Ystebø criticized Norway’s 2006 policy of only following the UN list, which omits several of these groups, and pointed to EU, British and American practices as precedents.

He linked the proposal to broader homeland-security goals, arguing it would hinder recruitment and operations on Norwegian soil. The party plans to present the bill in the coming days, seeking cross-party support, especially from right-wing factions.

Why it matters

A national terror list could change how Norway monitors and counters extremist groups.
