KU Leuven mass incorporates Islamic chants into Catholic opening ceremony

At the start of the academic year, KU Leuven held a Catholic mass in the St. Peter's Church that featured Islamic prayer chants in addition to the usual Kyrie and Gloria. The Flemish student association KVHV Leuven shared a video of the service on Instagram and X, criticizing the decision as a breach of the university's Christian foundations. The group asked where respect for Western traditions remains when such practices are introduced.
KU Leuven has not provided a comment on the rationale or timing of the chants. During the following opening address, the rector spoke about climate change, the situation in Gaza and the importance of respecting other cultures.
