Kuala Lumpur police aim to turn KK Mart outlets into community safety hubs
The Kuala Lumpur police chief announced plans to designate 24-hour KK Mart stores as Go-To-Safety-Point locations, leveraging their lighting and CCTV networks.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus presented a proposal to use KK Mart convenience stores as Go-To-Safety-Points across the capital region. Around 700 outlets that operate round the clock, feature bright lighting and have centralised CCTV systems were identified as suitable. Police hope to obtain permission to view the stores' camera feeds, enhancing surveillance of nearby neighbourhoods.
The initiative was unveiled at a press conference marking the opening of a KK Mart branch inside the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters, the first of its kind. KK Mart founder Datuk Seri Dr Chai Kee Kan, who oversees roughly 1,100 branches nationwide, expressed support and pledged cooperation, including sharing footage for police investigations. The partnership aims to provide the public with immediate assistance during emergencies, crimes or security threats while ensuring store compliance with government premises regulations.
