Klint Kubiak told the Raiders that all players must continuously earn their jobs, a message that keeps rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza in the running for the starting role behind Kirk Cousins. The franchise has deliberately used Cousins to protect Mendoza while he adapts to the NFL’s speed and complexity. Although no starter has been announced, Mendoza has about a week to demonstrate better ball handling, pre-snap command and the ability to process defenses without costly mistakes.
His recent 80-yard interception return highlighted the need for tighter decision-making. If he can consistently execute routine plays, protect the football and lead the offense confidently, he could force Kubiak to reconsider the depth chart.
