Kuching police investigate two explosive attacks on convenience stores
Police in Kuching say two convenience stores were targeted with firecracker-type devices on the same night, causing fires but no injuries.
Kuching police chief Alexson Naga Chabu reported that a convenience store at King Centre was hit by firecrackers at about 7.05 pm, causing no damage. A second assault happened later on Jalan Green, where two masked men threw an object that detonated, starting a fire that was later put out by firefighters. Preliminary analysis shows the attacks used comparable tactics, with suspects wearing dark clothing and using explosive or flammable devices.
Police are examining CCTV footage and testing material recovered from the scenes to determine if the incidents are linked. The motive remains unknown, and the cases are being pursued under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance. Investigators are also looking into claims that the shops offered online gambling top-ups, which could lead to licence revocation if verified.
