Kyrgios receives reduced suspension after treatment program for out-of-competition cocaine use

Nick Kyrgios, who had been provisionally suspended, participated in a treatment programme sanctioned by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) to shorten the standard three-month ban imposed for a positive cocaine test. During an interview, Kyrgios said the cocaine was used socially on a night out prior to his scheduled match in Mallorca, and an independent scientific expert at a WADA-accredited laboratory agreed the detected level was consistent with that account.

Consequently, the ITIA ruled the drug use occurred outside competition and accepted the reduced sanction. The suspension is set to expire on Thursday, provided the programme is completed, while Kyrgios will lose the prize money and ranking points earned in Mallorca. He previously apologized on social media, acknowledging a “huge mistake” and taking responsibility.
