L.A. County Board pushes study for new gender equity office
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to ask county agencies to examine the creation of an Office of Gender Equity, with a report due in 60 days.
Los Angeles County supervisors approved a motion, led by Lindsey Horvath, to have county officials evaluate the prospect of establishing an Office of Gender Equity. The directive tasks the Chief Executive Office, the Department of Public Health and County Counsel with delivering a feasibility report within 60 days. The board’s vote was 4-0, with Kathryn Barger not present.
Holly Mitchell proposed an amendment to ensure the new office would not duplicate work already performed by other county entities, which the board accepted. The forthcoming report must suggest where the office could reside within county government, identify existing programs that could support it, and provide a clear rollout schedule. This effort comes after the Women and Girls Initiative, a temporary program launched in 2016, was allowed to sunset in 2024, prompting calls for a permanent structure to advance gender equity across county operations.
Why it matters
A permanent gender equity office could centralize and strengthen efforts to combat discrimination within Los Angeles County government.
