LA County DA holds family picnic in MacArthur Park as police intensify drug sweeps

District Attorney Nathan Hochman kept a pledge made in June to "clean up" MacArthur Park by holding a family picnic there, aiming to show that public safety has improved. He acknowledged the park remains imperfect but pointed to visible police activity and community organization involvement as signs of progress. Federal prosecutor Bill Essayli, who has prioritized dismantling the park’s drug trade, described the area as an "open-air drug market" and cited a series of recent busts.

Law-enforcement officers have been detaining individuals caught using or selling fentanyl and methamphetamine, with 37 arrests recorded this year across coordinated operations. Despite these efforts, reporters still observed drug use in certain sections of the park on Friday. Hochman emphasized that the park will no longer be allowed to function as a "cemetery" for crime, while acknowledging that further work is needed to fully restore the space.
