La Liga to assess Celta Vigo's pitch after suspected fungus outbreak

La Liga representatives are set to conduct a pitch inspection at Celta Vigo's Estadio de Balaidos within the next day after reports of a fungal outbreak damaging the grass. The league's assessment will decide whether the club's request to postpone its season-opening game against Osasuna, slated for Sunday night at 20:30 BST, can be granted. While Celta seeks a delay, Osasuna have indicated a preference to play as scheduled.

The venue, which hosted a Spain friendly versus Iraq in June, is in the midst of a decade-long refurbishment that will eventually expand its capacity to between 40,000 and 44,000 for the 2030 World Cup co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Celta previously declined to postpone the match despite striker Borja Iglesias reaching the World Cup final with Spain. Additionally, three other La Liga matches from the opening weekend have been rescheduled because of clubs' involvement in the World Cup final.
