LA28 selects Atlanta to launch U.S. leg of 2028 Olympic torch relay

LA28 confirmed that the American leg of the 2028 Olympic torch relay will kick off in Atlanta, revisiting the city where Muhammad Ali famously ignited the flame during the 1996 Games. The torch will be brought from Olympia, Greece, to the United States in spring 2028 and will traverse every state before arriving in Los Angeles for the July 14 opening ceremony. Janet Evans, serving as LA28’s chief athlete officer, emphasized the torch’s role as a unifying symbol beyond medals.

While the precise path remains under development, officials aim to include small towns as well as major landmarks. The committee is also working to secure additional funding for transportation logistics, a concern highlighted by city officials. A detailed route will be disclosed in 2027, and the torchbearer selection process will be announced in the coming months.
