Labor MP Anne Aly reports 19 death threats after stoning comment in parliament

Labor MP Anne Aly said she received 19 death threats after Liberal MP Angie Bell suggested she and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese should be “stoned”.

In a parliamentary debate, Liberal-National member Angie Bell urged that Anne Aly and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese be “shamed and stoned in the square” over a tax policy issue. Aly, the first female Muslim MP for Labor, posted a video stating she had received 19 death threats following the remark, adding that similar threats have occurred before. She condemned the phrasing as both racist and misogynistic, arguing it violates Australia’s stance against violence toward women.

Bell was asked to retract her comment and did so, with Liberal frontbencher Tim Wilson praising the prompt withdrawal and emphasizing the importance of language in politics. The incident highlights heightened online abuse directed at politicians, particularly those from minority backgrounds.
