Labour MPs refer Green Party's anti-Zionist policy to police and equality watchdog

Over a dozen Labour MPs have complained to Sussex Police and the Equality and Human Rights Commission, alleging that the Green Party's "Zionism is racism" policy and chants at its Brighton conference may constitute antisemitic offences.

Over a dozen Labour MPs, including former Home Office minister Mike Tapp and Labour Friends of Israel chair Mark Sewards, have formally reported the Green Party to Sussex Police and the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Their complaint centers on the party's "Zionism is racism" policy and chants at the Brighton conference that declared "Zionists are not welcome here," which they argue may have been used to incite hostility toward Jewish people.

In a letter, the MPs request that police examine potential breaches of the Public Order Act, gather evidence, and decide whether a criminal investigation is warranted, while also urging the EHRC to probe possible Equality Act violations. The motion, approved by 1,022 votes to 814, labels Zionism as a form of racism and commits the Green Party of England and Wales to an anti-Zionist stance, sparking opposition from senior members like former co-leader Carla Denyer. Green Party members defended the debate as civilised, whereas Labour frames the issue as a potential antisemitic offence.

Why it matters

It questions whether political speech at a party conference breaches laws against antisemitic harassment.
