Labour restores Karl Turner's whip on conditional basis after apology

MP Karl Turner has had the Labour whip reinstated on a probationary footing after apologising for his public criticism of government jury-trial reforms.

Karl Turner, the Labour MP for Hull East, said his approach to opposing the government's proposals to curb jury trials had been too robust on several occasions. He issued a public apology, noting the offence he may have caused fellow party members and committing to more restrained behaviour. After talks with the Government Chief Whip, the Labour Party decided to restore his whip, but only on a probationary basis.

A party spokesperson praised Turner's constructive engagement and his acknowledgment that his actions fell short of expected standards. The spokesperson also highlighted the importance of his assurances regarding future conduct. The party now looks to move forward with Turner participating fully as a Labour MP.

Why it matters

The reinstatement shows Labour's effort to balance internal discipline with allowing dissent on controversial policies.
