Labour volunteers shift from persuasion to voter enrolment in South Auckland

Labour campaigners in Wiri are spending door-knocking time helping residents complete enrolment forms after a new law moved the deadline to 13 days before the poll.

During a door-knocking session in Wiri, Labour candidate Williams discovered that a large share of residents she approached were not enrolled to vote, prompting a shift from persuasion to enrolment assistance. The recent amendment to electoral law now requires voters to be on the roll by midnight 13 days before election day, eliminating same-day enrolment that existed in the 2023 election. Labour leader Chris Hipkins criticised the Electoral Commission for decreasing its enrolment efforts and cautioned that the new cut-off could cause voters to arrive at polling stations only to find their votes invalid.

Volunteers are guiding people through the enrolment process and warning them that, because the public roll is already set, they will need to submit a special vote. The party hopes the effort will prevent disenfranchisement in its traditional strongholds, while also highlighting broader concerns about economic pressure on working-class voters.

Why it matters

Tight enrolment deadlines risk excluding voters, especially in Labour's key South Auckland base.
