Labrador search dog uncovers dozens of flood victims in Nepal's Rasuwa district
A Labrador named Samba, part of the Armed Police Force’s K-9 unit, has helped locate about 20 bodies buried by the recent floods in Rasuwa, Nepal.
Rescue operations in Nepal’s Rasuwa district continue after severe flooding left many people missing. Teams from the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police are combing through collapsed structures, riverbanks and tunnels, aided by a K-9 unit. Samba, a Labrador brought from India and trained to detect the scent of human remains, alerts his handlers with a bark when he senses a body beneath the ground.
His behavior—slowing, focusing, sitting or scratching the earth—guides rescuers to dig at precise spots. So far, Samba has helped locate around 20 bodies in the Trishuli region and at Timure. The Armed Police Force has deployed five trained dogs, while the Nepal Police and Nepali Army have also contributed additional canine units to the effort.
Why it matters
The dog’s detections speed up recovery of flood victims, offering closure to families and aiding rescue logistics.
