Lagoa Council signs pact to shore up coastline after severe Algarve storms
Lagoa municipality has entered a cooperation agreement with Portugal’s Environmental Fund and the Portuguese Environment Agency to restore storm-damaged coastal infrastructure at Senhora da Rocha.
Following the destructive storms that battered the Algarve earlier this year, Lagoa Council formalised a partnership with the Environmental Fund (Fundo Ambiental) and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) on September 21. The deal funds a series of interventions aimed at repairing damage, enhancing public safety and boosting the coastline’s resilience under the national Resilient Territories programme. Work will begin with topographic, geological and geotechnical assessments to determine the best engineering solutions for the municipal road and beach access staircase at Senhora da Rocha.
While construction proceeds, temporary pedestrian access will be established to limit disruption. Deputy mayor Ruben Palma signed on behalf of the council, and mayor Luís Encarnação highlighted the agreement as evidence of the municipality’s commitment to secure funding and act quickly for climate-related challenges.
