Lahore High Court dismisses petition to free Imran Khan's sisters after detention extension
The Lahore High Court threw out a petition seeking the release of Imran Khan’s three sisters, noting the Punjab government had extended their preventive detention for another month.
The Lahore High Court, presided over by Justice Abher Gul Khan, dismissed a petition filed by Shahrez Khan seeking the release of Imran Khan’s three sisters—Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi. The Punjab government, represented by an assistant advocate general, confirmed that the deputy commissioner had recommended and the home secretary had approved an additional 30-day preventive detention, originally authorized under the 1960 Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance.
The court noted that the petition failed to list the deputy commissioner as a respondent, limiting its jurisdiction to order any further relief. As a result, the judge disposed of the case, relying on the official report of the extended detention. The sisters were initially taken into custody in September while the PTI organized a planned march toward Islamabad.
Why it matters
The ruling shows the judiciary’s limited ability to intervene in politically sensitive preventive detentions.
