Lahore High Court prolongs injunction against deporting Afghan medical students
The Lahore High Court extended a stay order preventing the expulsion of Afghan medical students while the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council prepares its response.
In Lahore, Justice Khalid Ishaq presided over petitions filed by over 30 Afghan medical students contesting Pakistan Medical and Dental Council notifications that ordered their removal. Among the petitioners was Syed Mubeenul Fatti. The council’s counsel referenced a direction from the prime minister’s office permitting the students to continue their studies provided they satisfy visa and immigration requirements.
When asked for a written response, the counsel requested more time, which the judge granted, scheduling a future hearing. The court also reaffirmed its earlier order that blocks any deportation actions against the students. The stay follows earlier notifications issued on July 31 and September 1, which the students have asked the court to declare illegal.
Why it matters
The ruling determines whether Afghan refugees can continue their medical education in Pakistan, affecting their future and bilateral ties.
