Lakers look ahead after LeBron exit, unveil roster overhaul centered on Kessler
Lakers GM Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick said they are optimistic about the team's future following LeBron James’ departure and the addition of center Walker Kessler.
In a start-of-season briefing, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka expressed gratitude for LeBron James’ eight-year tenure before noting the star’s decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers. Pelinka emphasized the franchise’s optimism, pointing to the recent signing of 7-foot-2 center Walker Kessler from Utah for a four-year, $130 million contract as a cornerstone for building around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Coach JJ Redick said Kessler’s rim-protection addresses a long-standing defensive weakness and that the team will rely more on its expanded bench, which now includes Collin Sexton, Quentin Grimes, Kevon Looney, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Ziaire Williams, Matisse Thybulle and rookie Cameron Carr.
He also mentioned the continued growth of the front office, now over 15 new staff focused on scouting and development. The Lakers aim to create a younger, deeper roster that can develop together under the new ownership group.
