Lakewood Husband Arrested for First-Degree Murder After Teacher’s Slashed-Throat Body Found
A Colorado elementary art teacher was found dead with a throat wound, and her husband was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder.
On Aug. 13, 2026, police responded to a Lakewood residence where 37-year-old art teacher Lindsey Barnett was discovered in the shower with a 5- to 6-inch throat wound and a serrated knife beside her. Her husband, 40-year-old Patrick Theodore “Ted” Barnett, reported a self-inflicted injury but detectives noted extensive blood on the couple’s bed, a small female footprint, and hidden blood trails that implied the body had been moved.
Forensic analysis also documented fresh scratches, cuts and dried blood on Barnett’s body that were inconsistent with his statements. Additional bruises and defensive injuries on Lindsey contradicted any suicide scenario, and her mother denied any prior suicidal behavior. Barnett was taken into custody later that day after a traffic stop in Evergreen and is being held without bond on first-degree murder charges, with a court date set for Aug. 20. The school district confirmed her role as an art teacher and offered counseling to staff and students.
Why it matters
The arrest underscores a violent homicide involving a local educator and raises concerns about domestic abuse and child safety.
