Landlord accused of killing tenant testifies about violent confrontation
An associate testified that landlord Steven Frederick Johnson wanted tenant Christopher Jarvis out over unpaid rent, describing a violent encounter that led to Jarvis's alleged death.
In a trial at the Victorian Supreme Court, an anonymous associate provided testimony linking landlord Steven Frederick Johnson, 74, to the alleged killing of tenant Christopher Jarvis, 38, in June 2006. The associate said Johnson wanted Jarvis evicted for missed rent and car payments, stating he needed the "prick" out of the house. According to the witness, Johnson struck Jarvis with a starter pistol, silenced his screams, and later shot him in the ear before ordering the associate to help load the victim into a car.
The pair allegedly drove to a forest, where Johnson dug a shallow grave, stripped the body, and used a baseball bat to finish the assault. Afterward, they dumped Jarvis’s car at Thunder Point in Warrnambool and set it ablaze. Johnson has pleaded not guilty, acknowledges a rent dispute, and denies any violent wrongdoing. The trial continues.
