Landlords Offered Up to Double Market Rent to Host Asylum Seekers
Landlords contracted by Clearsprings Ready Homes are being offered rents up to twice the market rate to house asylum seekers, prompting criticism from officials.
Clearsprings Ready Homes, a private provider engaged by the Home Office, is negotiating three-year tenancy agreements to place asylum seekers in properties across southern England and Wales. The contracts promise payments that cover rent, utilities, council tax and upkeep, with some offers reaching £4,500 a month for a three-bedroom flat in south London. By contrast, Southwark Council pays £1,790 for the same unit to house social-housing families.
A landlord who declined the higher offer explained that accepting it would require terminating his current agreement with the council, potentially leaving vulnerable families homeless. The arrangement has drawn criticism from Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp, who argues that it puts British households at a disadvantage. The debate now centers on whether landlords should receive premium rates for hosting migrants.
Why it matters
The proposal could reshape rental markets and affect housing availability for both asylum seekers and local families.
