Landslide in Kerala's Idukki district kills three and prompts weather alerts

A landslide hit Kottakamboor in Vattavada, Idukki district of Kerala, resulting in three deaths - a woman and two men whose bodies were later recovered. Local police linked the fatalities to a flash flood that surged through the Chokkad River. In response to the severe weather, the India Meteorological Department issued a yellow rainfall alert for seven districts, including Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki, forecasting up to 115.5 mm of rain within 24 hours, and placed Idukki and Kottayam under an orange alert.

The incident coincided with heavy precipitation in Gangtok, Sikkim, where continuous rain caused multiple landslides, mudflows and road closures. The District Disaster Management Authority in Gangtok began a comprehensive damage assessment across the affected area. These events highlight the vulnerability of hilly regions to sudden floods and landslides during intense monsoon periods.
