Landslide in Sikkim’s Mangan district partially blocks Teesta and Chyakoong rivers

During the night of September 5-6, a large section of hillside above the Chyakoong River gave way in Sikkim’s Mangan district, collapsing near the newly constructed Naga-Tosa Road cut in the Naga Forest. The landslide fell close to the junction of the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers, opposite the Theng Tunnel, and has partially obstructed the flow of both waterways. District administration received reports from district police and Chungthang Sub-Division police, prompting immediate monitoring by the Station House Officer of Chungthang CP/PS and staff at Theng CP.

Water has pooled in both rivers, turning the flow muddy, though overall discharge remains normal at Sankalang OP and Phidang OP. Authorities have instructed local monitoring stations to watch water levels closely and the Police Control Room to alert vulnerable lower-belt areas as a precaution.
