Lansing Catholic to host first outdoor varsity volleyball doubleheader on Aug. 20

Lansing Catholic will stage the Volley Turf Takeover, an outdoor varsity volleyball doubleheader at Cougar Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 20.

After researching successful outdoor volleyball showcases in East Grand Rapids and a high-attendance college match in Nebraska, Jill Marlan persuaded Lansing Catholic to host a similar event in the capital. The Volley Turf Takeover is set for Thursday, Aug. 20, at Cougar Stadium and will open with a middle-school clinic at 2 p.m. before a varsity doubleheader: Williamston faces Portland at 5 p.m., and DeWitt takes on Lansing Catholic at 7 p.m. Marlan’s daughter Leighton, a senior on the Lansing Catholic team, helped promote the project, which raised over $25,000 for equipment and venue costs.

DeWitt coach Carley Robertson expressed excitement about the novelty of an outdoor game for her players and the community. Organizers aim to make the event a recurring highlight for Mid-Michigan volleyball fans.

Why it matters

The game introduces outdoor volleyball to Lansing, promoting women's sports and community engagement.
