Laos appoints Saleumxay Kommasith as prime minister after Sonexay Siphandone’s removal

Laos’ National Assembly voted unanimously to replace Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone with his deputy Saleumxay Kommasith, who also assumes the National Assembly presidency.

In a unanimous vote, Laos’ National Assembly enacted a major reshuffle, ousting Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and installing his deputy Saleumxay Kommasith as the new head of government. Sonexay was reassigned as president of the National Assembly, taking over the seat previously held by the deceased Xaysomphone Phomvihane. Saleumxay, a 57-year-old diplomat with experience as foreign minister and UN envoy, emphasized that the economy grew 4.8 % in the first nine months of 2026, up from 4.6 % a year earlier.

He also pointed to ongoing challenges in agriculture, including floods, pest outbreaks and African swine fever, as well as rising fuel costs. The change follows a series of recent cabinet adjustments linked to Laos’ post-pandemic debt crisis and recent energy-price shocks. Analysts note the move may reflect short-term political calculations rather than long-term policy shifts.

The leadership swap could reshape Laos’ economic reforms and response to ongoing agricultural and energy challenges.
