Las Vegas Resident Sentenced to Ten Years for Fentanyl Distribution and Firearm Offense
James Brooks was sentenced to ten years in federal prison for conspiring to distribute fentanyl and for possessing a handgun during the drug sale.
A federal court sentenced Las Vegas resident James Brooks to ten years behind bars after he admitted to a conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and to possessing a firearm in furtherance of that crime. Court documents show Brooks bought cash for about 2,000 fentanyl pills and collaborated with co-defendant Geronimo Gutierrez to distribute them. During the sale, Brooks was found with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and a high-capacity magazine.
Both defendants entered guilty pleas to the trafficking conspiracy, while Gutierrez also pleaded guilty to a money-laundering charge and was sentenced to 97 months in January. Prosecutors emphasized fentanyl’s extreme potency—just two milligrams can be fatal—and reiterated a commitment to disrupt deadly drug networks and protect the Las Vegas community.
