Late-blooming left-back Pep Chavarria signs five-year deal with Chelsea
Spanish defender Pep Chavarria has joined Chelsea on a five-year contract after four seasons with Rayo Vallecano.
Pep Chavarria, a 28-year-old left-back from Figueres in Catalonia, has signed a five-year contract with Chelsea, with the fee reported at roughly £16.3 million plus additional add-ons. After beginning his career with his hometown club and a spell at Olot, he moved to Real Zaragoza in 2020 before breaking into La Liga with Rayo Vallecano in 2022. Over four seasons at Rayo, he accumulated 125 matches, showcasing a blend of defensive tenacity and physicality that impressed opponents such as Real Madrid.
His display against Madrid caught the eye of Xabi Alonso, now Chelsea’s manager, who targeted him as part of a wing-back system. The signing also strengthens Chelsea’s left side after the departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and complements the arrival of right-back Marco Palestra. Negotiations were reportedly complex due to Rayo’s high release clause, but the deal was ultimately concluded.
Why it matters
Chavarria's move highlights Chelsea's strategy to reinforce its defense with players proven in top European leagues.
