Late-night Uber ride sparks safety concerns after driver diverts to charging stop

A woman on a 3 a.m. Uber trip ended the ride and called police after the driver missed an exit and asked to stop at a garage to charge the electric vehicle.

In a TikTok video, a rider described a 3 a.m. Uber journey that turned uncomfortable when the driver requested a brief stop at a parking garage to charge the electric car, stating the battery was at 43%. The driver then missed the expected exit, prompting the passenger to question the destination and refuse entry into an unfamiliar lot. She ended the ride, alerted police, and Uber responded that it had reviewed the report and applied appropriate measures, highlighting in-app safety features like an emergency button, location sharing, and trip-detail sharing.

Safety experts, including Dillon Abend of the 3rd-i app, noted that unexpected route changes can cause anxiety, especially for solo travelers at night, and recommended sharing location with trusted contacts. Seymour Josephson of the What's My Name Foundation, which promotes rideshare safety after his daughter’s fatal mistake, reiterated steps to verify driver and vehicle identity before boarding.

Why it matters

The incident highlights ongoing safety risks in rideshare services and the need for stronger passenger safeguards.
