Latin Grammy winner detained by ICE; wife urges his release
A Cuban percussionist and 2022 Latin Grammy winner was taken into ICE custody at Miami Airport, and his wife is pleading for his freedom.
Degnis Nelson Bofill Miranda, a Cuban percussionist who earned a 2022 Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album, was detained by ICE on August 19 when his flight landed at Miami International Airport from New York. After several days at the Miramar Enforcement and Removal Operations office, authorities transferred him to the Krome Detention Center in Miami-Dade County. His wife, Mara Delgado, who married him in 2023, expressed anxiety about a possible deportation and has appealed for community assistance, setting up an online campaign to raise $60,000 for legal fees and bond.
Delgado highlighted Bofill’s role in Miami’s music scene and his involvement with the Latin Recording Academy’s voting body since January 2025. ICE maintains that Bofill entered the United States legally in April 2023 but violated the terms of his admission, and he will receive due process.
