Latino running club relocates 5K after backlash in historic Black LA neighborhood

Barrio Athletics announced that its weekly 5K, originally set for Leimert Park in the Crenshaw district, would be held instead at Elysian Park close to Dodger Stadium. The change followed immediate objections from neighborhood residents who feared the race would interfere with a historic Sunday market where Black vendors earn a living. Social-media users framed Leimert Park as a "black space" and accused the Latino group of using the run to scout the area amid gentrification anxieties.

Some opponents even threatened to involve ICE or confront participants. The organizers said they altered the route to respect local vendors and avoid disturbance, but critics remained unsatisfied. Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic Hope, urged Mayor Karen Bass to intervene, emphasizing the park's cultural significance to Black Los Angeles.
