Latvian authorities say ports can handle all domestic grain shipments

The Ministry of Transport confirmed that Latvian ports possess enough handling and storage capacity for all domestic grain shipments and have not rejected any cargo. Transport companies are adhering to all relevant sanctions, and regulatory bodies are conducting strict oversight throughout the logistics process. An extraordinary government meeting directed ports and state railway operator Latvijas dzelzceļš to give priority to grain from Latvian farmers.

The cabinet also decided to grant the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) authority to inspect grain at ports, including verifying its origin, pending regulatory changes. PVD Director General Māris Balodis noted that current inspections do not cover transit cargo, but future amendments could enable document checks and sampling, a service that would be paid by the cargo sender and could cost up to 900,000 euros per shipment.
