Lauderhill officer arrested for fraudulently claiming deceased man's home
Officer Brian Sguros was detained on five felony counts after allegedly using a dead resident’s identity to seize the property.
A Lauderhill police officer, Brian Sguros, was taken into custody on a warrant charging him with five felonies, among them official misconduct and the unlawful use of a deceased person’s identification. The allegations stem from a July 2022 welfare check in which officers found a man dead from natural causes; Sguros later purportedly claimed the deceased’s home as his own, submitting a City of Lauderhill building permit using the dead man’s identity and a notary’s seal.
He also accessed police computer systems without authorization to retrieve the homeowner’s records. The deception was uncovered when the legal heirs pursued probate, prompting an investigation aided by the Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office and its Crimes Against Property Unit. Sguros, hired in March 2021, was suspended with pay in July and is now suspended without pay. Police chief Constance Stanley emphasized the breach of duty to protect vulnerable citizens.
