Law enforcement unions rally behind Rep. Mike Lawler in tight Hudson Valley House race

Rep. Mike Lawler secured endorsements from eleven police unions as he battles Democrat Cait Conley for New York's 17th Congressional District.

Republican Representative Mike Lawler, seeking a third term in New York’s 17th Congressional District, announced endorsements from eleven law-enforcement unions spanning state and local agencies, such as the Police Conference of New York, Rockland County PBA, Port Authority PBA, and the New York State Fraternal Order of Police. Speaking beside officers in Haverstraw, Lawler emphasized the region’s safety record and his commitment to backing “the blue.”

Union leaders praised his record and family-first stance, noting the endorsement was based on his congressional performance rather than party affiliation. Lawler faces Democrat Cait Conley, a former Biden administration intelligence official, Army combat veteran, and West Point graduate, in a race that recent polling shows as virtually even. The Cook Political Report has classified the contest as the sole toss-up in the state this cycle. Conley’s campaign spokesperson declined to comment on the endorsements.

Why it matters

Police union support could tip a narrowly contested congressional seat in a key New York district.
