Lawmakers Challenge Trump-Linked Renaming Plan for Kennedy Center

Rep. Joyce Beatty filed an emergency motion to stop the Kennedy Center’s proposal to embed Donald Trump’s name on the venue and its grounds.

Representative Joyce Beatty submitted another emergency filing to block the Trump administration’s effort to incorporate Donald Trump’s name into the John F. Kennedy Center’s signage. Beatty contends the move breaches a May 2026 court decision that the center may bear only Kennedy’s name. In response, the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees told the Washington, D.C. district court it would rename the venue to include Trump’s name and label the surrounding grounds “President Donald J. Trump Plaza,” contingent on a $100 million endowment from the Trump Kennedy Center Fund.

Beatty’s counsel requested both a temporary stay and a permanent injunction against the renaming and the planned two-year closure for major structural work. The board cited one outlet analyst’s presentation as the basis for its decision, while Beatty criticized the process as rushed and insufficiently documented. The legal battle continues as the center approaches its fall season.

Why it matters

The case tests limits on political naming of a national cultural institution and could set precedent for future federal-funded venues.
