Lawsuit Accuses Piedmont Airlines of Racial Harassment and Hostile Workplace at Phoenix Airport

The estate of former Piedmont Airlines baggage handler Niena Allen filed a federal suit alleging repeated racist actions and a hostile work environment at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

A federal complaint filed by the estate of Niena Allen, a Black baggage handler who worked for Piedmont Airlines, alleges a long-standing pattern of racist conduct at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The filing describes white supervisors posting a photo that reenacted George Floyd’s murder, a noose discovered in the oversized-baggage zone, and a February 2025 incident where staff quoted Django Unchained while one wore a bag over his head to mimic a Ku Klux Klan hood.

According to the suit, management either ignored or inadequately investigated these events, allowing the involved supervisors to remain employed and even be promoted. The complaint further asserts that white employees were treated more leniently for infractions, while Black workers faced discipline for lesser offenses. Allen died at age 42 in June 2026, but her estate continues the case, seeking damages, interest, legal fees and alleging violations of U.S. civil-rights laws. Piedmont Airlines declined to comment, reiterating its stated commitment to respect, integrity, inclusion and accountability.

Why it matters

The case highlights alleged systemic racism within a major U.S. airline, raising concerns about workplace safety and civil-rights compliance.
