Lawyers and family march to Parliament demanding murder probe of detainee death
Lawyers for Liberty will lead a march with Noorizwan’s relatives to Parliament, urging a murder investigation into his death while in police custody.
Lawyers for Liberty announced a march that will begin at Taman Tugu at 10:30 am and head to Parliament, where participants will submit a memorandum demanding a murder investigation into the death of detainee Noorizwan. The 42-year-old was arrested on Sept 19 for alleged drug possession, theft and a break-in, held at the Cheras police headquarters, and later taken to Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM, where he was declared dead on Oct 1.
LFL director Rania Aljunied and lawyer Dina Zamri challenged Bukit Aman’s statement that Noorizwan suffered only external injuries, pointing to a pathologist’s report of generalized brain bleeding and intestinal hemorrhage caused by blunt head trauma. They urged Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar to order a murder classification and a special investigative team from Bukit Aman. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has instructed Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail to oversee a thorough and transparent probe, and Khalid has directed the criminal investigation department to examine the unusual injuries.
Why it matters
The march highlights public demand for accountability in a custodial death, pressuring authorities to re-examine the investigation.
