Lawyers demand murder probe after detainee dies in Kuala Lumpur police lock-up

Lawyers for Liberty say the Kuala Lumpur police chief’s remarks deflect from the fatal injuries of detainee Noorizwan Zulkefly and call for a murder investigation.

Lawyers for Liberty, representing the relatives of Noorizwan Zulkefly, sharply criticised Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Fadil Marsus for using the detainee’s past arrests to sidestep questions about the extensive injuries that led to his death in lock-up. Attorneys Rania Aljunied and Wan Nabila Dina Wan Zamri described the chief’s press briefing as “irresponsible” and demanded that the case be classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

They called on Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar to intervene, to order the arrest of all officers at the Cheras district police headquarters involved, and to set up a Bukit Aman-led special investigation team. Police officials said they have not yet determined the cause of death and are waiting for the Chemistry Department’s analysis and the pathologist’s full report. The incident has sparked nationwide outrage over alleged police brutality and the handling of custodial deaths.
