Lawyers probing custodial death face police investigation in Malaysia
Lawyers for Liberty members who sought post-mortem photos of Noorizwan Zulkefly’s injuries are now being investigated by police, sparking accusations of intimidation.
Noorizwan Zulkefly, a 42-year-old father, died while detained at the Cheras district police lock-up, with a senior pathologist reporting 21 injuries and death from blunt-force trauma to the head. Lawyers for Liberty secured the autopsy photographs, revealing the extent of the assault and prompting public outcry. Police now investigate LFL directors Latheefa Koya, N Surendran and counsel Dina Zamri for allegedly pressuring Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz to disclose the images.
LFL director Rania Aljunied called the investigation "outrageous" and argued it threatens the right of families and lawyers to pursue justice. The group demanded that Inspector-General Khalid Ismail halt the probe, that Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail assure protection for those seeking accountability, and that police focus on classifying the death as murder and investigating the involved officers.
Why it matters
The probe could chill legal advocacy and public scrutiny of police-related deaths in Malaysia.
