LDS Church to launch immersive virtual tour of Salt Lake Temple by 2027
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will release a 3-D virtual tour of the Salt Lake Temple, with partial footage debuting in October and the full experience available online in spring 2027.
During a recent news conference, church officials revealed plans for a technology-driven virtual open house of the Salt Lake Temple, scheduled to run from April 5 to Oct. 1, 2027. A preview of the video assets will appear in October, with the full immersive tour arriving next spring on TempleSquare.org and the Temple Square mobile app. The capture process employs an X Grids portal cam operated by Johnny Rodriguez, chief innovative officer at Fresh Consulting, which records both images and point-cloud data to recreate interior spaces like the Celestial Room in photorealistic 3-D. Elder Gary E. Stevenson noted that the project makes the celebration a worldwide event, reflecting the global nature of the church. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf highlighted the tour as a way to share the temple’s significance with members worldwide.
Why it matters
It lets millions of Latter-day Saints experience a sacred site without traveling, using cutting-edge 3-D technology.
