Lead levels in Dorog's Kenyérmezői stream exceed legal limit by 37 times

During a Dorog municipal council session, independent councilor Magyar Péter read off water-quality data that reveal the Kenyérmezői stream contains lead at 37 times the legal threshold, nickel at 12.6 times, zinc at 5.4 times and petroleum-based hydrocarbons at 14 times the allowed limits. The figures stem from a June analysis performed by the Győr-Moson-Sopron Vármegyei Kormányhivatal’s water-resources department, prompted by the councilor’s earlier complaint.

The county government warned that, despite the high concentrations, the pollutant load is considered too small to endanger the Danube or the nearby drinking-water basin. Nevertheless, the Dorogi Rendőrkapitányság has opened a criminal case for suspected environmental pollution. Mayor Tittmann János stressed that remediation is the duty of the state environmental authority, noting that the stream is state-owned while the runoff channel belongs to the town. The councilor also recalled severe contaminations in 2004-05 that temporarily jeopardised Esztergom’s water supply.
