Lecornu seeks dialogue with Socialist lawmakers to forge a 2027 budget compromise

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu sent a letter to the Socialist members of parliament offering a meeting to craft a compromise on the 2027 budget, echoing a similar arrangement reached for 2026. He stressed that political differences should not hinder collaborative measures that serve the country's interest, especially as debt-interest payments strain resources for education, health and investment. Lecornu warned that a budgetary censure could lead to harsh austerity and potentially extend beyond the presidential election and forthcoming legislative polls.

The proposed dialogue aims to advance initiatives on hydroelectric power, child welfare, compensation for chlordécone victims, and a comprehensive law against sexual violence. He also seeks Socialist input on agricultural drought support and housing aid for fire-affected families.
