Lee Jae-yong to receive $1.94 billion of Samsung Electronics shares from mother

Samsung Electronics executive chairman Lee Jae-yong will be gifted about 11.16 million shares worth 2.6 trillion won by his mother, Hong Ra-hee.

According to a filing, Hong Ra-hee, former director of the Leeum Museum of Art and widow of Lee Kun-hee, will give Lee Jae-yong approximately 11.16 million Samsung Electronics shares valued at 2.6 trillion won based on the latest closing price. The gift, representing a 0.17 percent ownership stake, will raise Lee’s total holding from 1.58 percent to 1.75 percent once the transfer is finalized on Nov. 12. Hong’s own stake will decline from 0.99 percent to 0.82 percent.

Samsung Life Insurance continues to be the top shareholder with an 8.51 percent stake, and the broader family-affiliated group controls about 19.7 percent of voting shares. The Korean tax authority is expected to assess the gift tax early next year, with an estimated liability of roughly 1.56 trillion won. This move follows previous transfers, including a full 1 percent stake in Samsung C&T gifted to Lee last December.

Why it matters

The transfer boosts Lee Jae-yong's control of Samsung, affecting corporate governance and market dynamics.
