Lee Lam Thye calls for nationwide effort to stop violence from becoming normal

Lee Lam Thye warned that unchecked school attacks and community violence could normalize aggression in Malaysia and urged a whole-society response.

Lee Lam Thye cautioned that if incidents such as student stabbings are left unaddressed, Malaysia could become accustomed to violent conflict resolution. He called for a comprehensive, whole-of-society strategy that includes government bodies, educational institutions, families, community groups, NGOs and media outlets. Schools need stronger early-warning and intervention frameworks, with teachers, counsellors and administrators trained to detect warning signs like bullying and threats.

He also highlighted the role of parents in supervising online content, noting that exposure to violent media and cyber-bullying can foster aggression among youth. While law enforcement must act firmly on weapon-related crimes, Lee stressed that legal action alone cannot solve the problem; a cultural shift toward respect and peaceful dispute resolution is essential.

Why it matters

Unchecked violence in schools could erode societal norms and increase aggression across Malaysia.
