Legal group urges Texas to probe over 1,000 duplicate voter registrations

The Public Interest Legal Foundation filed a federal complaint asking Texas authorities to investigate 1,057 duplicate voter registrations found in 22 south-Texas counties.

A review of voter registration data in 22 south-Texas counties revealed 1,057 instances where individuals appear to be registered more than once. The Public Interest Legal Foundation, an election-integrity watchdog, lodged a complaint on Monday invoking the federal Help America Vote Act, which obliges states to keep accurate voter rolls. The filing calls on Texas officials to investigate and resolve the duplicate entries, stressing that even minor errors can affect election outcomes.

The foundation noted that the bulk of the issues were found in Brownsville and McAllen. Its president and general counsel, J. Christian Adams, said the mistakes are easy to fix and should be addressed quickly. The complaint seeks to ensure that Texas voter lists comply with federal standards and maintain public confidence in the electoral process.

Why it matters

Duplicate registrations can undermine confidence in elections and may affect vote counts.
